Back in Black

Man I love that AC DC track

So today I thought I should test out the new sketch pad I bought for the inking. I wanted to try something simple first just to see how things progress. I got the idea of using the famous Frankenstein image that you see quite often around the net. So I sketched out a rough draft using the image as a base point.

After that, using my window as a ‘archaic’ lightbox, I traced the basic structure of the concept sketch on to the art paper from the new sketch pad. I am currently in the process of getting a proper lightbox. I was going to try and build one but a friend of mine opted to rather take on the manual labour seeing as my hands are of the ‘delicate’ nature. Haha… Anyway I’m super excited for the lightbox.

From there I started on the inking process. I’m really trying to use more arm and less wrist but it is proving difficult. But as they say, practice makes perfect. This is how far I’ve reached so far. I’m liking the how it’s shaping up actually. I’m hoping to have a lot of powerful black areas in this illustration. I’m still undecided on what to do with the background. For now I have the idea of a full moon but I’m still not sold on it.

All inked up

Well it has been quite some time since my last update on this blog. I have figured out what is causing the problem in my timing of the updates though… I keep promising to keep the blog up to date. No more I say! I promise nothing now. Hahaha…

Anyway let me say what I’ve been up to lately. I started up an indie t-shirt brand with a buddy of mine recently. We’re looking to put the art back in to t-shirts. I’ve had it up to here (yes…there) with an over-saturated market with over-priced t-shirts that don’t even qualify as art any more. We only have a handful of designs running at the moment but that was just to get our toes wet in the “clothing industry” so to say. We do the printing ourselves and I have to say that we’re doing one hell-of-a-job for two guys that are practically self-taught in silk screening. But with our adventure in to silk screening lately we have stumbled across so many hiccups in the industry thus far. We have so many ideas in the pipeline that is going to shake the foundations of the silk screen industry. Never mind the ideas we have for our clothing line as well. That’s one thing you will come to realise about the brand. If we do something… We do it right.

On the art side of the brand I am super excited to flex my illustrating abilities on the brand. I can finally work on designs that suit my taste. But this also allows me to experiment more with the types of illustrations the brand will orientate it’s self with.

Been shopping around for a new tablet and was told about this site that offers Wacom tablets at affordable prices. And I mean really affordable. I bought my Genius MousePen set-up for more than what the Wacom Bamboo is on offer for, and the quality of the Wacom is beyond Genius’ (Haha… See what I did there?). So in the next few months I’m looking to put together a nice little savings fund to help me gain a new Wacom. Any sponsorships or donations are welcomed… Just putting it out there.

Until I acquire my fancy new tablet I will be trying my hand at traditional inking methods. This being India Ink and brushes. I bought a little ‘Starter’ kit the other day consisting of a small bottle of Winsor & Newton India Ink, #1 #3 #6 Brushes and an awesome A4 Sketchpad. I’ve never really tried this type of inking before and it has been a few years since the last time I wielded a paint brush. So now I have to read up on the techniques used for inking and just keep practising I guess. Keep with the whole ’self taught’ situation hey. Hahaha.

This skull sketch was my first attempt at inking with the brushes. I’m pretty pleased with the outcome even though there is still a long way to go in my line definition and quality. Like I said it has been awhile since I’ve used a paint brush so I really need to get back in to that frame of mind. By that I mean I need to stop using my wrist and use my entire arm to create the lines. I’ve uploaded a little sketch of rough line practice. I have a feeling I will have quite a few of these lying around my desk in a short period of time. Have to practice using my arm more! Lock that wrist people!

Practice practice...practice

Been super busy lately with client projects. So I can’t complain much but I have fallen behind in updating this blog which kinda sucks. Not much news from my side other than that we were forced to get rid of our cat, Peppadew. The place we recently moved in to has suddenly becom anti-cat and told residence to get rid of their cats.

Worst thing I have ever done in my life so far was getting a new home for Peppadew. I still feel awful. She filled a gap in our lives that is unique. But not wanting to be beaten down by this new anti-cat law we went out and got ourselves new pets to fill that void.

May I present to you Incubus and Succubus. Haha… Demons as always.

Moving. And it sucks.

Thursday, April 2nd, 2009

Yip. It’s that time again. We’re moving to greener pastures. Well I like to think they’re greener. Our lease is up at our current place of residence and I’m not going to be renewing it. I’m not happy with how things are being done. So rather than add unnecessary stress to my already stressed life I opted to find a new residence. (Even though that has proved to be just as much of a stressful task). We should be in the new place by this coming Sunday and hopefully by Monday I will have my operation set up again. I really hate moving though.

Anyway… Here’s a new icon design I am busy with. I’m planning on launching a icon set based on the use of opensource software (ie. The Gimp or Inkscape). This is more of a learning experience for me so that I can learn how to use the software in the process.

My contact page went all screwy for some reason. It’s fixed now though. Twilight zone kinda stuff…

Hmmm… Change could be in the air tonight

Tuesday, March 24th, 2009

Wasn’t there a song with a similar title? I think it was Love in the air tonight, or something. Not sure.

Anyway about two weeks ago I stumbled across The Gimp. Now I’ve known about it for a few years now but never really paid it much attention. Well that was until two weeks ago. After downloading it I gave it a test drive. My first impression was that it wasn’t Photoshop, that’s for sure. But after a few mess arounds one starts to realise that this is in fact a diamond in the rough. With it only being on version 2.6 (The legendary PS on 14 now I think?) it is definitely going to be to be a strong contender in the years to come with digital art.

Let’s just say that it impressed me so much that I set off to seek out more of this ‘Open Source’ world. My next adventure moved on to Inkscape. I am by nature a vector fan and love messing around in Illustrator. So this was even more interesting to test. Man was I blown away. Obviously I had to stumble my way around trying to associate myself with the layout and how the tools operate, but once that was done it was easy to create and manipulate nodes to my hearts desire. The thing that really amazed me is the fact that they have somehow integrated a better blurring function… That’s right. I said better. It works so well that you have to fight of the urge to use the raster effect if you intend to use the design for more traditional vector uses.

These two applications impressed me so much that I even moved on to yet another adventure. Open source OS. Yip, I went out and got myself a copy of Linux. Linux Fedora 10 to be exact. Now I did a total noob thing in this adventure. I basically did no research and had no idea that there are a number of distros you can choose from. Oh well… You learn faster by making a mistake I guess. So now I have to teach myself another OS (I despise Windows in general and am an Apple fan by heart) that is as open source as you can get I guess. I’m still finding my way around and sorting things out on the installation. So I can’t really give much of an opinion on the OS just yet. But I will be in the near future.

In the mean time here is a little icon experiment I did.

Things have been quiet around here…

Well my blog anyway. Hehe…

Seems like I’ve slumped back in to a rut of not updating this thing. Well I have been busy with some projects lately so I do have news to tell. I’ve also been experimenting with Open Source design software lately and I must tell you that they are indeed setting a benchmark. I’m still trying to find my way around them (Trying my hand at Gimp, Inkscape and Blender) but once I have an understanding of how they work I can easily foresee using them more on a regular basis.

I know inkscape isn’t really set up for print design but I’m sure with a little research I could track down some plug-in to make sure it will manage that. I’m actually quite excited to try these out. I generally love tinkering with gadgets so having to play around with software that’s designed to be rebelious against mainstream design kinda makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside.

In other news I am busy with a few website projects so at least my online portfolio will have some additions to it pertaining to the world wide web.

Man I haven’t updated this thing in ages. Well I am sorry about that but I have valid reason as to why. I’ve been really pushing my freelancing more lately. That meant redesigning my portfolio website which seemed to take forever. Well it’s finished and it looks good, even if I have to say so myself.

My next mission is to incorporate this blog in to the new design on my website. So hang in there and soon enough everything will be in one place. I also have a small free vector pack that going to be released soon. So keep your eyes peeled.

A new look…

I’m currently redoing my website which will integrate the blog in to the theme so that everything fits universally. It will look much better that way in the long run.

Here’s a sneak preview of the theme:
